Bull seeks Maffra sports upgrade

The need to upgrade the Cameron Sports Complex in Maffra was the topic of discussion when Gippsland East Nationals MP Tim Bull met today with representatives of the Maffra Gymnastics Club.

“This facility is the hub of community sport, particularly junior sport, in Maffra, a community that has strong participation levels and a proud sporting history,” Mr Bull said.

“I have a firm view a lot of the problems we encounter in wider society can be addressed by involvement in sports clubs. It puts our kids around good role models and teaches them about winning humbly, losing graciously and thinking about other people – sport in many ways is a crash course in life.

“It’s disappointing we have waiting lists for children wanting to be involved in community sport, so we need to respond to that by providing expanded facilities where required,” he said.

Robyn Dowse, Head Coach of Maffra Gymnastic Club, confirmed there was a waiting list of over 100 children who want to take up gymnastics.

“We’ve got a great club here but are certainly pushed for room and expanded facilities would assist us greatly,” she said.

Regular user groups of the Cameron Street Sports Complex include the Maffra Amateur Basketball Association, Maffra Cricket Club, Maffra Junior Football Club, Maffra Gymnastic Club and Maffra Hockey Club, all which have strong memberships that continue to grow.

“I strongly support the upgrade of the Cameron Sports Complex and last Parliament sitting week I urged the Minister for Sport, John Eren, to invest in the future of sport in Maffra by partnering with Wellington Shire Council to deliver these improvements,” Mr Bull said.
